Last year YouTube quietly started employing a radically different theory: Instead of filtering out the bad videos, it’s easier to bury them in an onslaught of good ones. With Creators for Change, the streaming company hand-selects a group of young creators and endows them with funding, resources, training, and publicity. Over the summer, Lapowsky attended a gathering of these creators, which she writes about in a profile this week. “It’s not hard to see what YouTube gets out of the program: a built-in brigade of likeable, compelling spokespeople, who fully … Read More

When the heat beats and our stride slows to the frequency of the sun’s waves When the blessed of us go from one air conditioning unit to the coolness of another -as we only know the interim, we don’t labor in it We water our plants in the evening after the sun sets, so we aren’t wasting water on a scorched earth. Seasons do change us. I’m creeping up on another birthday and closing in on another work anniversary Both are conspiring and pushing against old ideals for myself; and pardon if I haven’t gotten a grip yet -hence my silence and absence The ego is the enemy. I didn’t go downstairs to stand in the horseshoe parking lot with one hundred other curious souls this afternoon during the eclipse. It’s not that I was nonpulsed about it though. I watched a live stream via NASA on my ipad during my lunch break, as the two were simultaneous; then I viewed through special glasses outside of a broker’s office window as the dark orange encapsulated. I’m ‘meh’ about the visuals and more about the feels. Because here I am hoping, the entire globe chills the F out for a sec and presses the reset button. In our personal lives, maybe. On the macro level, that would be winning the Powerball. Whether one is an astrological mocker or astronomically … Read More
