Reflection for Thowback Thursday The banana bread recipe post instigated a reflection on my previous (auto-correct spelling called it ‘precious’; I refrain from over-analyzing) gluten free, vegan dessert business of 6 years. I did a handful of savory things, but that was just for a handful of my clients. I had the business a year before my first website, entirely through a physical newsletter. By the time of its demise, I’d actualized two websites and worked with vegan and vegetarian caterers in Dallas providing their desserts, whole-selling to a couple stores, and doing how-to demo classes at Whole Foods and Sur la Table in Dallas and a few classes in NYC. I took it fairly far; so many don’t … Read More

Regardless of my music, I have often gone by my first name only. It stands independently, well enough. How many other Brockas do you know? When i call and make a dinner reservation, I’m internally like ‘do you really need my last name!?’ Not to sound like a narcissist but come-on man! Can’t it be a singular pronoun like Cher, Madonna, Rihanna, Beyoncé? I would like to eventually be able to market myself as such, yes, admittedly. If I were to say “Elton”, you may immediately assume Elton John. Rightfully so, it’s 3 syllables; it rolls off the tongue well. Also, how many Eltons do you know? There is a cadence to names, labels, advertising, marketing. What can we easily … Read More

Matches Memory

I don’t even smoke cigarettes, but I get ridiculously stingy-giddy when I enter a restaurant and the host desk displays a bowl of matches, boxed wooden ones being the ultimate to covet. The sharp snap and the warming smell of burning wood tinged with the love-or-hate delight from sulfur fumes. I’m a lover, always have been. The strike of a match or a burning wood fire always stirs a memory of some kind for everyone, every.one. That’s what smells do, illicit times and places. Matches are tiny tangibles that linger longer than the scent. They are labelled reminders of places we were, people we were with, or even other countries we visited. Haven’t you written on one the date, or … Read More

It is fantastic that some girls-women have enough money to buy anything they desire and play dress up – ‘pretend model’, for posting on their social media sites, and thus encouraging other girls to go purchase the same brand name labels, for the subconscious sake of acceptance/conformity. Proven by the link liketoknow.it Even if not on social media, every woman has once stood in front of a closet full of clothes exasperated, ‘I have nothing to wear!’ WOW, what a string of thought, but this really is the sequence of events and psychology behind it. Commercialism and group-think, these are the bare-bone terms. (pun) I fall back on this Zen thought often: Would you want it if you didn’t know … Read More

‘Oh Hi’ existing blog, sorely neglected because all the thoughts stay lodged in my brain, either over-thought or neglected after a whimsy of interest; verses each tended to, uncovered, investigated…as if *steps* are needed before I can actually just sit down and write it. So many whims and flutters of interest, intrigue, insight. To sit and disclose one thought means I must pontificate on the subject whole-heartedly, as if it needed googling and thorough research. Do we come into any day-to-day conversations needing prior research? As if that is what our cell phones sitting on restaurant dining tables insinuates. And if only this were the case…Oh if people were so intelligent they would have less to say. Let us all … Read More
