Connect Before the Unexpected

One morning last week I received a call from one of my mother’s friends whom I see maybe twice a year. So it was random. ‘So sorry to bother you this early, I figured if anyone would know what Kabbalah is, so I called you….I got invited to this thing…things really need to change. I just need to do something different, it’s time.’ I found nothing unusual about this call coming from her, as I am aware of some of her miserable circumstances. Her trepidation in the call had more to do with being ignorant of the practice, a derivative of Judaism. Often, and unfortunately, it takes a breaking point before we seek solace or answers outside of ourselves. And these breaking … Read More

Will-power To Fail

There are very few things that bother me more than being let down when i get my hopes up about something or someone. I usually don’t get excited until the actual event is upon me or the person is with me or the object is in my hands. I kinda consider myself a cautious optimist. And i never share good news until it is happening or already happened. Worse than being disappointed is having to also explain to other people: the fall-out, the cancellation, the mistake. So i wait…until it’s sure. The expectations I have for myself will always surpass by leaps and bounds any that others may have for me. Therefore, I really don’t like to let myself down. … Read More

I am finding that as an adult it is more difficult to make new friends. There is so much going on in all our lives, and social media means we can connect without having to physically change our schedule and present our bodies in person. Heck, maintaining the tried and true ones from grade school are difficult due to the varying paths we go down. Rarely do they merge. Making the effort to keep in touch and hopefully ‘pick up where we left off’ is all I hope to gain generally. Being at the tail-end of the holidays has me reflecting on this. I often hear my fave talk radio guy Dennis Prager say how ‘Friends are the people you … Read More

Ignorance is Bliss

I have been thinking about how deliberate we can be in filtering what we are exposed to. It is both very difficult and very powerful to our conscious. People who aren’t that interested in politics get sooooo freaking tired of the news and can turn it off, or even decide to never even view Fox or CNN. Parents can practically eliminate all tv from their children. As an adult woman, there is one thing I have been very conscientious of: ignoring the magazine stand at any grocery store! There are 2 main reasons why i do not subscribe to or even read female magazines: Consumption and Disease. Here’s what i mean: Every advertisement is based on consumption: have to have, … Read More

We are the most evolved society, which means we have access to everything any time. This isn’t necessarily a good thing. It means there are more things to want, and we are getting further away from our needs. It has been proven study after study that lower socio-economic countries like India have much higher happiness levels. America is strung out on anti-depressants, up 400 times in the last 2 decades! http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/news/fullstory_117723.html I really think these things correlate. A few years ago I went with two guy friends to Big Bend state park in Texas. It is a mountainous terrain of about 11 miles, a hikers paradise. We only did 8 miles and finally struck camp on a peak that looked … Read More
