Honest to Goodness

If this phrase-idiom isn’t both Christian and southern, I don’t what to say to ‘y’all’! “a real honest-to-god live cowboy”; “had us a high old time”; “went upriver to look at a sure-enough fish wheel” ((what the f*** is a fish wheel, seriously)) Colloquially, it is the preface to an exclamation. Instead of saying ‘Oh God!’ (or) ‘Oh my God!’, (oh G*d or Oh my G*d – if you are Jewish) -it is  both raw and without taking Jesus name in vain. I am neither church going or of this habit. I lean towards ‘mother f***’ truth be told, especially when driving. Maybe if I were making a pie and, ‘honest to goodness’ this fruit would be better than that fruit. 🙂 Every cliché has its place. What i love about it: It is literal. It isn’t just a … Read More

The Power of Sleep

I don’t even want to write this; probably means I should. Yesterday I started my day at 5 am. Today I attempted to function, not so well, with about 4 hours of inconsistent sleep. Thus, the deficit is REAL! I do not recommend this. I become very negative. my brain hovers over the ‘nots’ and the ‘don’ts’, from the short-fused and impatient place. Do you listen to yourself? Do you know when you are in the right place or the unhealthy place? This is the most extreme example. Sleep-deprivation is the oldest technique in interrogation; the Chinese have known this forever. Coincidentally, todays Delancey Place email is on sleep deprivation, an excerpt out of the book Dreamland: Adventures in the … Read More

Instant Gratification

Much.Less.Satisfying. In this moment feeling the overwhelmed with words and blog post ideas, so instead of planning: will just sit down to it and go with the stream of thought. I am absolutely one of those persons who needs the setting to be ‘right’. Morning email: reads the news and professional things before the fun or fictional things. I eat the vegetables before the protein because i’m a ‘save the best for last’ eater. I clean off the work space entirely before I can organize the external music writing lyrics. Everything for me is very orderly. The world is, science and chemistry are; humans are habitual. Our best health is about this. Some people are actually under the impression they … Read More

Honestly

Often, and this happens quite often: I’ll be thinking on a scene or place, a forgotten person, or an idea : and then immediately someone is going to or returning from that place, a number of food bloggers are manipulating a nut or vegetable in the same off-handed way, the long lost friend calls or actor is back in the news randomly, and a business blogger will acknowledge the same concept or working theory I just settled on. Call it coincidence, but this happens weekly, consistently. I know that the internet in and of itself is a brain; but it is connecting us in a new way too. A micro example of this: a couple very disparate blogs I read … Read More

Healthy Gut

Maybe it was the start of summer, the heat lending to more cold fresh salad cravings -or the variety of fresh sweet fruit screaming ‘nature’s candy!’. There have been a handful of reasons why I’ve tweaked some personal habits in the last few months, like tea over coffee. One thing I’ve always known from years of having studied and one half year of having parasites, our digestion IS our immune system. This is why the axiom ‘food can heal, food can kill’ is so spot on. It is also a topic I am not shy about discussing. You know when things aren’t working, it effects everything. So yeah, this book Gut, The Inside Story of Our Bodies Most Underrated Organ … Read More
