One Extreme or The Other

Welcome to Me. The title is my modus operandi. Pardon the hiatus. The last two weeks have been so stressful. I have weathered the storm. This post is coming from a brand new hard drive. This personal Macbook has nothing of my former self. Nothing from the old one is recoverable, and I don’t give a damn. (re-reading this line made me smile so hard) I had already been in the process of pulling info onto flash drives, distinguished by categories. Everything else is superfluous. Everything from here feels fresh. Clean slate, literally and metaphorically. February 8th is the Chinese New Year. It feels like a better, real new year to me, because the western astrological new year of January … Read More

My Writing History, and Our History Repeating

If you haven’t surmised by this point, I don’t really do long form writing. Sometimes. When it is necessary. For some reason, I’ve never enjoyed reading short stories either; ironic considering how I will cozy up to an anthology of a book in a second, or a great journalism piece. I noticed this when I was a subscriber to The New Yorker for 10+ years. I would always skip over the short stories. Only if I were in a dire emergency for something to read, would I flip back through. (when cell phones were really just for calling and not for reading blogs subscribed to. still, never leave home without reading material!) Intellectually, I am aware of my predilection for … Read More

Not even halfway through January, thought i’d sound-in on the personal updates before I loose myself down other rabbit hole blogging topics. What I’m Reading Most of my reading comes by referral. I commented on social media recently how my reads would be on the lighter side this year. This in no way implies just fiction or casual investment of time. I just mean I’m not spending a significant amount of time on one history or biography of 300+ pages, taking up nearly 2 months! In this stack there is culture, history, practical applicable information, spiritualism ‘without the woo-woo’ –Tim Ferris, AND a Murakami. ‘I can’t believe I havent read this one!’ Murakami. Coming from a librarian nerd, don’t you … Read More

The Stoics really did know best/better. I wanted to share a bit more Stoicism from a very approachable post. I summarized from this post for you: my thoughts in italics What’s the worst that could happen? Usually it never does Act ‘As If’. Yes, smiling will make you feel happier. Make it a Treat. Going without will improve your willpower and make you appreciate more. I personally practice this everyday by not snacking between meals, or even intermittent fasting too. I like to be hungry when I eat. All food taste better then anyway. Forgive yourself. We are human. It’s not about perfection; it’s about improvement. If you set a resolution, you won’t hit it out of the ballpark every.single.day. … Read More

A New Year Experiment

I can give or take resolutions. People generally change when they need to, not when they necessarily just want to. The want and the need must be aligned. Frankly, we evolve into something else as time goes by. ‘When the timing is right’ is such a lovely clich√©, because it is true. Without adding to your year-end listicles of ‘Best Of this’ or ‘Favorite Things that’, I thought I’d showcase many options to pick or experiment with. 21 Self-Improvement Experiments and Where They Are Today Don’t be deterred by the length -it reads fast and it’s cool; they are few sentences synopses. I’ve read David’s blog for a very long time, so Ive read him though most of these and … Read More
